Bold Point Farmstay on Quadra Island is warmed by the Pacific Ocean. We have a 300 day frost free, growing season for year round harvesting. We take great pride in growing and serving the freshest of produce, organically grown garden fruits and vegetables, naturally raised meats and ocean fresh wild, seafood.
We have 14 raised beds, numerous heritage apple trees, plus plum and sour cherry trees, berry bushes and our beloved hazelnut trees. We companion plant, weed, rotate crops and rely on snakes, toads and birds for insect control. The farm is managed without the use of pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilizers.
Sheep manure and good composting practices together with chlorine-free well water ensures the purest and healthiest produce. Goodness, you can taste and feel! Absolutely EVERY sauce, muffin, cookie, pie crust, dressing is made from scratch! We don't have a bread machine or microwave!
Our sheep and lambs graze on six acres of pasture. The ducks, lay hens, and meat chickens are fed corn, wheat, and barley - not fortified pellets. They roam 10 acres of forest, bush, and field. We NEVER use HORMONES or ANTIBIOTICS!
In addition to our entire farm-grown produce, we are active wild crafters: harvesting wild fruits, teas, greens, and mushrooms! We begin in spring with the careful picking of Stinging Nettles (Utica diode), to be lightly steamed and served with Balsamic vinegar, crushed garlic in extra virgin olive oil. Nettles are known to contain amazing healing and cleansing properties.
In May we go into the forest and pick oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus) from the stems of Alder trees. About 30 pounds (20 kg.) per year are dried or canned. In September we go "chroming" again, this time for forest gold i.e. Chantrelles (Cantharellus ciborium).
Sometimes 25 - 50 lbs (18 - 36 kg.) are collected between September and October to be marinated, dried, canned, or eaten very fresh!
